L'utilité du vivre n'est pas en l'espace, elle est en l'usage; tel a vécu longtemps qui a peu vécu ... Il gît en votre volonté, non au nombre des ans, que vous ayez assez vécu.
The value of life lies not in the length of days but in the use you make of them; he has lived for a long time who has little lived. Whether you have lived enough depends not on the number of your years but on your will. [Montaigne]

Hunstanton Household Accounts (HHA) comprise one large category of documents once stored in the Hunstanton Muniment Room (HMR). The HMR documents may be described in various ways, as they have been in this study, by the calendars that catalog them, by the places wherein they have been reposited, and by the major studies devoted to them. At present, almost all the HMR documents have been deposited in the Norfolk and Norwich Record Office, where they are known by the name Le Strange Collection or Hunstanton: Lestrange MSS. Their catalog numbers derive from pressmarks that were placed on the documents in 1869, and are hereafter identified as Hunstanton Muniment Room (HMR) numbers.

1579 In 1833 the Royal Society of Antiquaries published "Extracts from the Household and Privy Purse Accounts of the Lestranges of Hunstanton from A.D. 1519 to A.D. 1579." These extracts were selected by Daniel Gurney, and he introduces them with the following words: "The original Accounts, from which I send you extracts, are not all in the same handwriting; they are paper books without covers; some of them are written by the steward or clerk of the kitchen; some by the personal servant of the knight, and one or two are either by the hand of Lady Lestrange herself, or by that of an amanuensis in her name." Gurney's accounts are verbatim, and were submitted to the society in a series of transcriptions. The reader should consult Gurney for the actual wording of accounts described in the appendixes. The aim in this work has been to reorganize the accounting data into an orderly chronology and to convert dates to Julian reckoning in place of regnal years and numbered weeks. Modern spellings have often been preferred, once the original forms have been noted in parentheses () or in italics. Gurney's transcription of the original accounts deserves consultation for the charm of renaissance diction and orthography.
