known as "Stockton's Independent Regiment," as it was organized
by Colonel Thomas B. W. Stockton of Flint; but it was afterward
given the numerical number of the Sixteenth. It was mustered
into service Sept. 8, 1861. The regiment left Detroit Sept. 16, 1861, for Washington,
D. C., to join the army of the Potomac. It went into camp at
Hall's Hill, Va., for the winter of 1861-2. The regiment was at the siege of Yorktown in April, 1862,
and participated in the engagement at Hanover Court House, Va.,
May 27.
June 27th it fought in one of the most desperate battles
of the war at Gaines Mills, Va., where it gallantly contested
with the enemy for the possession of the field. Colonel Stockton's horse was shot under him and he was
taken prisoner and sent to Richmond, Va., where he remained
until the following August before he was exchanged.
The regiment was at Harper's Ferry Nov. 1 and marched to
the Rappahannock and crossed that river at Falmouth and
participated in the battle of Fredericksburg, where it met with
considerable loss.
Colonel Stockton resigned May 8, 1863, and Lieutenant
Colonel Welch was commissioned Colonel May 18. Under his
command the regiment entered upon the Pennsylvania campaign and
fought in the historic battle of Gettysburg, adding a world-
wide fame to its laurels in the defense of Little Round Top.
It was in winter quarters at Bealton Station, Va., until
May 1 and the 6th and 7th of the same month participated in the
battle of the Wilderness, where it lost thirty-five killed and
wounded.
The regiment participated in all the movements in this
campaign with its corps, meeting the enemy at Spottsylvania and
at other places during the flanking operations of General
Grant's army. The Union loss in the battle of the Wilderness was 2,246
killed 12,037 wounded and 3,383 captured or missing. No doubt
many of the wounded were burned to death or suffocated in the
fire that raged through the Woods on Hancock's Front.
Concerning the enemy's casualties Badeau, in his Military
History of U. S. Grant, Says: "The losses of Lee no human
being can tell. No official report of them exists, if any was
ever made, and no statement that has been put forth in regard
to them has any foundation but a guess. It seems however,
fair to presume that as Lee Fought outside of his works as
often as Grant, and was as often repelled, the slaughter of
the rebels equalled that in the national army. The grey coats
lay as thick as the blue next Day, when the national scouts
pushed out over the entire battle-field and could discover no
living enemy.8 "
He and Harrison Way enlisted on 1 August 1861 at Flint, MI; as a private in Captain Carr's Company, Stockton's Regiment Michigan Infantry, which subsequently became Company C, Sixteenth Infantry. He signed up for 3 years at age 28.3,9 Abraham Way mustered on 7 September 1861.3 He mustered out and was honorable discharged to enable him to reenlist as a veteran volunteer. on 23 December 1863 at Rappahannock Station, VA.9 He mustered as a Corporal on 24 December 1863.3 He re-enlisted on 24 December 1863 at Rappahannock Station, VA.3 He died on 10 May 1864 at Wilderness, VA; of a gunshot wound.9 He died on 12 May 1864 at Spottsylvania Court House, VA; of wounds received in action on May 7, 1864.3
