He could only afford to attend school one semester per year; working the rest of each year for the U.S. Geological Survey. A lodge at Caney had defrayed most of his previous treatment expenses. He was found to be indigent and his brothers' and sisters' financial condition was considered poor; commitment papers filed.¹⁵ Ernst C.
