Promptly at eight o'clock the orchestra played a march and the two couple walked into the hall which was crowded with a host of friends. The couples, Mr. Patrick Hayt, aged 21 and Miss Mamie Walter, 18, were attended by Mr. and Mrs. James Mills, and Mr. Joe Hayt and Miss Julia Mills were the groomsman and bridesmaid to Mr. Charley Mayer, 24, and Miss Sadie Walter, 20. The beautiful ceremony was conducted by Rev. H. I. Bryant, of the Christian church. After hearty congratulations were extended and a few friends had taken their departure from the hall, the Grand March was played and the dance went merrily on until the 'we sma' hours put an end to the gaiety and the couples wended their several ways homeward. The "American Zinc Company was built in 1911 on the west edge of Taylor Springs. The plant was built to handle 100 tons of zinc ore and 200 tons of coal a day to produce 50 tons of slab zinc and 100 tons of sulphuric acid... One of the reasons for locating a plant near Hillsboro was the diminishing natural gas flow at the company's plant in Caney, Kansas. Also the coal mined in the Hillsboro area was considered a very fine gas-producing coal better than coal mined in other sections of Illinois."26,32 Charles John Mayer Sr. and Sadie Lauer Walter attended the Methodist church at Hillsboro, Montgomery Co., IL, between 1911 and 1925.17 The Mayer family's second home in Hillsboro was on Oak St; in a home later owned by Charlie Hull.31 Charles John Mayer Sr. lived between 1915 and 1918 at Caney, Montgomery Co., KS.33 He was a foreman between 1918 and 1920 at American Zinc Co., Taylor Springs, IL.4,34 He and Sadie Lauer Walter moved back to Hillsboro, Montgomery Co., IL, in 1918; again.35,36 On 20 September 1918, Charles John Mayer Sr. purchased land at 17 Helston Place, Hillsboro, IL, from Louis and Esther Smith of Nokomis for the sum of $4,000.00.
